Guide · AEO explained

What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimisation

AEO is answer engine optimisation: the work of becoming the source that answer engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews cite when they answer a question directly, rather than sending a click to your site. You earn it by being quotable and genuinely present where they read.

The short version

  • AEO stands for answer engine optimisation: earning the citation inside an AI answer, not just the click.
  • It matters because more questions end with a direct answer, so the reader never reaches your search result.
  • Answer engines pull from clear, quotable, consensus-backed content, and they read Reddit threads heavily.
  • You do it by being quotable, being present in the sources they read, and being genuinely useful.
  • No tool can guarantee a citation. subding surfaces the relevant Reddit thread so a person on your team can join it.

Why AEO matters now

For years the deal was simple: you ranked a page, someone clicked it, they landed on your site. That deal is fraying. When you ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews a question, you often get the answer straight back, stitched from sources you never visit. The click that used to be yours quietly disappears.

These are the zero-click answers, and they are becoming the default way a lot of people find things out. If the assistant answers ‘what is the best tool for X’ without listing your page, being ranked ninth on Google barely registers. What counts now is whether your name is in the answer at all.

The prize is no longer the click to your page. It is being the source the answer is built from.

That is the shift AEO responds to. It does not replace search visibility so much as sit on top of it, aimed at a moment where the reader may never see a list of links. We map the full picture, including where each engine fits, in our guide to AI visibility.

How AEO differs from classic SEO

AEO and SEO share a lot of plumbing. Clear structure, credible sourcing and content that genuinely answers the question help with both. The difference is the target. SEO wants a ranked page and a click; AEO wants a citation inside the answer, even when no click ever happens. Here is the split, line by line.

What answer engines pull from

An answer engine is only as good as the sources it can reach, so it favours content it can trust and quote cleanly. In practice that means a few recognisable things get pulled in far more than the rest.

  • Structured, well-labelled content. Clear headings, plain definitions and direct answers a model can lift without guessing what you meant.
  • Quotable statements. A crisp sentence that stands on its own is easier to cite than a paragraph that only makes sense in context.
  • Consensus, not a lone claim. When several credible sources say the same thing, an engine repeats it with more confidence.
  • Reddit threads, heavily. Candid, first-hand recommendations from real people are exactly what these engines reach for on ‘what should I use’ questions.

That last one is worth dwelling on. Reddit is one of the most-cited domains in AI answers, and its content-licensing deals with major AI companies wired those threads straight into the systems that produce recommendations. So a live thread asking for the best tool in your category is a place where your name can end up in tomorrow’s answer.

"shortlisting this week and would love a steer, what’s the best social listening tool people here genuinely rate? happy to hear the honest picks."

→ Join it while it’s live

The catch is timing. Threads like that get their answers in the first day, then settle. Find it a week later and the recommendations are already written, and one of them is not yours. Which is why a Reddit monitoring tool is part of the AEO kit: it tells you the thread exists while it is still live.

How to do AEO

There is no dashboard where you set your position in an answer. AEO is earned the slow, honest way, and it comes down to three durable moves plus the patience to let them compound.

  1. 1

    Be quotable

Write clear, specific, self-contained answers a machine can lift without mangling. State the point in one sentence, then back it. Vague pages get skimmed past; a sharp, honest answer gets pulled straight into the response.

  2. 2

    Be present where they read

An answer engine can only cite what it has seen. That means being in the pages and, crucially, the Reddit threads it reads: the ‘best tool for X’, ‘anyone recommend’ and ‘alternatives to’ conversations where people say what they actually use.

  3. 3

    Be useful, not promotional

The content that gets quoted answers the question first and sells second, if at all. Disclose who you are when you name your own product. A helpful, honest reply earns a citation; an advert dressed as advice gets ignored.

  4. 4

    Earn consensus over time

One page or one comment rarely moves an answer. A steady, genuinely useful presence across the right sources builds you into the consensus these engines read back to people. Think months of showing up, not a single push.

None of this is a growth hack. It is being clear, credible and genuinely helpful, in public, where the models everyone now asks happen to read. For the specific case of getting named by an assistant, we walk through it in our guide to LLM SEO.

The honest limits

AEO is worth doing, but it is not magic, and anyone selling certainty is selling you something. Keep these limits in view before you spend a budget on it.

What AEO can’t do

  • No one controls the answer. You influence what ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity say; you do not set it, and you cannot submit a form to be listed.
  • Citations move. A mention you earn today can quietly vanish as models update and the web shifts under them.
  • It is slow. Being read into the consensus takes months of consistent, useful presence, not a single campaign.
  • No guarantees. Better odds are the honest promise. Anyone offering a guaranteed citation is not being straight with you.
  • Tools surface; people act. subding is read-and-notify. It tells you when a relevant Reddit thread appears; it never posts, comments or joins on your behalf.

For the record, subding will not write a reply, upvote, or run an agent that participates for you, because it can’t and it shouldn’t. The awareness is ours to provide. The genuine, disclosed, human contribution is yours.

Questions, answered straight

What is AEO?

AEO is answer engine optimisation: the work of becoming the source that answer engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews cite when they answer a question directly, rather than sending a click to your site. You earn it by being quotable and genuinely present where they read.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO, in one line?

Classic SEO tries to rank a page so someone clicks it. AEO tries to be the source an answer engine quotes so you are named inside the answer, even when no one clicks. They overlap heavily, and good SEO still feeds AEO, but the win is different: a click versus a citation.

Does Reddit matter for AEO?

Yes, a lot. Reddit is one of the most-cited domains in AI answers, and for ‘best tool for X’ style questions the recommendation often traces back to what real people said in a Reddit thread. Being genuinely and openly present in those threads is one of the most direct ways to influence what an answer engine says.

Can you guarantee being cited by an answer engine?

No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. No one controls what ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity name, and the answers shift constantly. What you can do is make a citation more likely: be quotable, be present in the sources they read, and be genuinely useful. Better odds, never a promise.

Which answer engines should AEO target?

The ones people actually ask: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews. The good news is they lean on much of the same open web, so a source that earns a mention in one tends to earn it across several at once. You rarely optimise for just one engine.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They are close cousins. GEO (generative engine optimisation) is often used for the same idea, and some people split hairs over the labels. We keep it simple in our companion piece on GEO, SEO and AEO. In practice the work is the same: be the clear, credible, well-sourced answer.

How do you start with AEO?

Map the questions your buyers ask an assistant, write the clearest honest answer to each, and get into the sources those answers are built from, including the live Reddit threads where your category comes up. A Reddit monitoring tool helps you catch those threads early; the reply is yours to write, as a human.

Be in the source before the answer is written

You can’t order an answer engine to cite you. What works is being useful, in your own name, in the Reddit discussions it draws on, and reaching them before they harden. Catching those early is where subding earns its place.
