aeo vs seo: two jobs, one goal

SEO and AEO chase the same goal by different routes. SEO optimises to rank in the list of blue links a search engine returns. AEO, answer engine optimisation, optimises to be the source an answer engine quotes when it replies directly. One earns the click; the other earns the citation.

The short version

  • SEO optimises to rank in a list of links. AEO optimises to be the source an answer engine cites when it answers directly.
  • SEO sends a click to your page. AEO puts your name inside the answer, sometimes with a link, often without one.
  • SEO rewards keywords, backlinks and technical health. AEO rewards quotable, trusted, consensus content that models keep reading.
  • You need both. They overlap, and strong content tends to win on both fronts.
  • For recommendation questions, a lot of AEO is earned on Reddit. subding tells you the moment a relevant thread appears so a person on your team can join it. It never posts for you, and it can’t promise a citation.

What each one actually optimises for

SEO, search engine optimisation, is the work of ranking as high as you can on a results page. You pick the queries you want to win, then earn the position with useful pages, credible links and a site that loads and reads cleanly. The prize is a spot in the list, and the click that comes with it.

AEO, answer engine optimisation, is the work of becoming a source the answer itself is built from. An answer engine reads the question and writes back a direct reply instead of a page of links. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI all do this. AEO is about being the trusted, quotable thing they reach for when they compose that reply.

So the goal is shared: be the answer to someone’s question. The route differs. SEO gets you into the list a person then scans. AEO gets you into the reply a machine has already written for them. We unpack the newer half in what is AEO.

Where the attention goes: click vs cited answer

This is the sharpest practical difference. A good SEO result is a doorway: someone sees your title, clicks, and lands on your page, where you get to make your case and measure the visit. The whole model assumes a click.

An answer engine often skips the doorway. It reads your content, or what people said about you, then paraphrases the point into its reply. You might get a small link, you might get named in passing, and you might get quoted with no link at all. The influence is real, but the click you were counting on may never happen.

SEO fights to be the link someone clicks. AEO fights to be the sentence the machine says back.

Neither is better in the abstract; they simply pay out in different currencies. The table below lines up the same page against both jobs.

What each one rewards

The inputs overlap, but they aren’t identical. Knowing what each job pays out for is how you stop pouring effort into the wrong pile.

SEO rewards the classic signals. Relevant, well-matched keywords. Backlinks from credible sites. A technically sound, fast, crawlable page. Content that is genuinely more useful than the results above you, kept fresh over time. Do that consistently and you climb.

AEO rewards being quotable, trusted and repeated. Content a model can lift a clean sentence from. A brand that shows up, in a good light, across the open web a model reads. And, for ‘best tool for X’ questions especially, a consensus in candid places, which on the internet usually means Reddit. When enough real people say the same useful thing about you, that becomes what the model reads back.

  • Both reward genuine usefulness. Thin content ranks badly and gets quoted by nobody.
  • SEO leans on your own pages; AEO leans just as hard on what others say about you elsewhere.
  • AEO can’t be bought or faked without it backfiring. Manufactured praise gets caught, and answer engines aren’t the only ones reading.

Do you need both? Yes

Framing this as a contest is the wrong instinct. People still type queries and click ranked results, so SEO keeps earning traffic you can see and measure. People also ask assistants for a straight recommendation, and that is where AEO earns you a mention you’d otherwise miss. Drop either one and you cede a whole channel to competitors who didn’t.

The happy part is how much they share. A clear, trustworthy, genuinely useful page is the same page that ranks and the page a model is glad to quote. Build for humans first and you’re usually building for both at once. Where they part ways is off-page: AEO also depends on the conversations happening about you where you don’t control the wording.

  • SEO for the traffic that still clicks.
  • AEO for the answers written before anyone clicks.
  • One content engine feeding both, plus a real presence in the threads models read.

How Reddit fits into AEO

For recommendation questions, a large share of what answer engines read traces back to Reddit: real people naming the tools they actually use. Reddit’s 2024 content deals wired its threads straight into the systems that produce those answers, so a helpful comment from last month can shape a reply someone gets today. That makes being genuinely present in the right threads for Reddit one of the highest-leverage things you can do for AEO.

→ Join it while it’s live

The catch is timing. A recommendation thread gets its answers in the first day, then settles and gets indexed. Find it late and the recommendations are already written, and one of them isn’t you. So the unglamorous half of AEO is simply hearing about the right thread early, which is the one job a Reddit monitoring tool like subding does. It surfaces the thread; the genuine, human reply is yours to write. We never post, upvote or promise you a citation. There’s more on the mechanics in our AI visibility guide.

Questions, answered straight

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO and AEO chase the same goal by different routes. SEO optimises to rank in the list of blue links a search engine returns. AEO, answer engine optimisation, optimises to be the source an answer engine quotes when it replies directly. One earns the click; the other earns the citation.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. People still type queries and click ranked results, so SEO keeps earning traffic. AEO is the newer layer for the questions people now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google’s AI. Treat AEO as an addition to SEO, not a swap. The strong content that ranks tends to be the content models quote, so the two feed each other.

What does AEO stand for?

AEO is answer engine optimisation. An answer engine is any tool that reads a question and writes back a direct answer rather than a page of links, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google’s AI overviews. AEO is the work of becoming a source those engines trust enough to cite.

Do the same pages work for both SEO and AEO?

Often, but not always. Clear, well-structured, genuinely useful pages help both. The difference is that AEO also depends on what people say about you elsewhere, especially in candid places like Reddit, because that is a large part of what answer engines read when they decide who to recommend.

How does Reddit fit into AEO?

Answer engines lean heavily on Reddit for recommendation questions, so being genuinely present in the right threads for Reddit is a big part of AEO. A real, disclosed, useful comment is the kind of thing a model will happily quote later. There are no shortcuts, and no guarantees.

Can you guarantee a citation in ChatGPT or a ranking on Google?

No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Rankings and AI answers both shift constantly, and nobody controls them. What you can do is make yourself more likely to be cited or ranked by doing genuinely good work in public. Better odds, never guarantees.

How do you measure AEO versus SEO?

SEO has clean numbers: rankings, clicks and impressions. AEO is harder, because a citation inside an answer often sends no click and shows up in no report. A practical proxy is tracking when your brand, your rivals and your category get named in the conversations models read, so you at least see the mentions building.

Win the list and the answer

SEO earns the click. AEO earns the citation. Both start with being genuinely present in the Reddit conversations models read, and catching them while they’re live. That’s the part subding handles.
