Which AI engines cite Reddit, and how much

Most of them do, to very different degrees. Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode lean on Reddit heavily, ChatGPT and Gemini cite it when they search the web, Copilot picks it up through Bing, Grok reaches for it when X is too thin, and Claude barely cites it at all. If you want to be part of what those engines read, AI citation monitoring starts with the Reddit threads themselves.

How much each AI engine leans on Reddit

GrokModerateSometimes, though less than the search-first assistants.

“Leans on Reddit” is our reading of the public analyses cited in each section below, not a measurement of our own.

Does ChatGPT cite Reddit?

Yes. When ChatGPT searches the web to answer a question, Reddit is one of the domains it cites most, especially for "best tool for X" recommendation questions. OpenAI also signed a content deal with Reddit in 2024, so those candid threads are wired firmly into how ChatGPT answers.

Why ChatGPT leans on Reddit

ChatGPT reaches for Reddit because that is where honest, comparative opinion lives. When it browses, it wants sources that read like real people weighing options, and few places do that better than a long comparison thread, so those threads surface again and again in its cited answers.

The 2024 licensing deal formalised what was already happening. Public analyses through 2025 put Reddit among the handful of domains ChatGPT cites most for buying questions, which is a strong reason to care about your standing there.

Citation studies through 2025 (Profound’s analysis of 680 million AI citations among them) put Reddit among the domains ChatGPT cites most, and OpenAI signed a content deal with Reddit in 2024.

  • Expect Reddit threads to shape ChatGPT’s answer on recommendation questions.
  • Be genuinely present and well-regarded in the threads for your category.
  • Disclose who you are, since candid readers and models both distrust astroturf.
  • Treat a strong thread as a source ChatGPT may cite, not a guarantee it will.

Does Perplexity cite Reddit?

Yes, and more visibly than most. Perplexity retrieves live and prints numbered citations on every answer, and 2024–25 citation data put Reddit at about 6.6% of all its citations, more than any other domain. If any assistant makes Reddit’s influence obvious, it is this one.

You can watch it happen

Because Perplexity shows its sources, you do not have to take Reddit’s influence on faith. Ask it a "which is best" question and count how many of the numbered citations are Reddit threads. On opinion-led topics, it is often a striking share.

That transparency makes Perplexity the clearest proof of the wider pattern: candid forum discussion is a primary ingredient in AI recommendations, and being genuinely part of it changes what a live-retrieval engine finds to cite.

Perplexity attaches many sources to each answer. Profound’s 2024–25 citation data put Reddit at about 6.6% of all Perplexity citations, the most of any domain, and close to half of the citations among its top ten domains.

  • Ask Perplexity your category question and note the Reddit threads it cites.
  • Be present and credible in those specific threads, disclosed as yourself.
  • Keep a clear page it can retrieve alongside the discussion.
  • Stay current, since live retrieval rewards fresh sources.

Does Google AI Overviews cite Reddit?

Yes, and among the most of any domain. Google AI Overviews draw from the live Search index and cite what they summarise, and 2024–25 citation data put Reddit at around a fifth of the citations among their ten most-cited domains. For opinion-led queries especially, Reddit threads do heavy lifting in what the overview concludes.

One of the most-linked domains

An overview condenses the pages Google surfaces for a query and links its sources, so its citations track what ranks. Reddit ranks a lot since the 2024 deal, which is why studies keep finding it near the top of the domains overviews link.

That makes overviews a clear window on the wider trend. If the summarised answer above the results is quoting Reddit threads, those threads are shaping the first thing millions of searchers read.

Profound’s 2024–25 citation data put Reddit at about 2% of all AI Overview citations but around a fifth of the citations among its ten most-cited domains, making it one of the most-cited single sites.

  • Assume Reddit threads feed the overview on opinion-led queries.
  • Rank for the exact question and give a clean, liftable answer.
  • Be well-regarded in the threads the overview tends to cite.
  • Keep facts aligned across sources, since the overview reconciles them.

Does Google AI Mode cite Reddit?

Yes. Google AI Mode fans a question into several linked searches over Google’s index and reads across them, so the Reddit threads that rank for those sub-queries feed its answer. Since Reddit ranks widely across Google since 2024, it turns up throughout the searches AI Mode runs.

It meets Reddit across the fan-out

AI Mode does not cite Reddit from one search but from many. Each sub-query it runs can turn up Reddit threads, and because it reads across all of them, a well-placed thread has several chances to be pulled into the answer rather than one.

That breadth compounds Reddit’s prominence. Where a single overview links a handful of sources, a fan-out gathers from a wider spread, so candid threads that rank for the specifics show up more often than you might expect.

AI Mode runs a fan-out of linked searches over Google’s index per Google’s own 2025 announcements, so the forum threads that rank, Reddit prominent among them, feed the answer.

  • Assume Reddit feeds AI Mode across the sub-questions it searches.
  • Be present in the long-tail threads Google ranks, not just the head one.
  • Cover the specifics, since a fan-out reaches into them.
  • Keep facts consistent, as the model reconciles many sources.

Does Gemini cite Reddit?

Increasingly, yes. Gemini grounds many answers in Google Search, and Reddit’s visibility in that index rose sharply after the 2024 Google–Reddit content deal. So when Gemini grounds a recommendation question, the Reddit threads Google now surfaces are part of what shapes its reply.

It cites what Google surfaces

Gemini does not cite Reddit as a special case; it cites what its grounding in Google Search returns, and Google now returns a great deal of Reddit. The content deal that put those threads higher in ordinary results also put them in front of Gemini.

So the honest answer depends on grounding. For a current recommendation question where Gemini grounds in Search, expect Reddit to feature. For something it answers from training alone, less so.

Gemini grounds answers in Google’s index, where Reddit’s visibility climbed sharply after the 2024 Google–Reddit content deal reported across the trade press.

  • Assume Reddit feeds Gemini on grounded recommendation questions.
  • Be well-regarded in the threads Google ranks for your topic.
  • Rank your own pages too, since grounding leans on the same index.
  • Keep facts current, because grounded answers mirror the live index.

Does Microsoft Copilot cite Reddit?

Often, yes. Microsoft Copilot answers from the Bing index and footnotes what it used, and Bing has long surfaced Reddit for candid product talk. So on recommendation questions, Reddit threads that rank in Bing are a common source in what Copilot cites.

Reddit reaches Copilot through Bing

Copilot does not have its own separate feel for Reddit; it inherits Bing’s. Since Bing routinely surfaces Reddit threads for opinion-led searches, those threads carry into Copilot’s footnotes on the same kinds of questions.

It is less studied than the Google-based assistants, so precise figures are thinner, but the mechanism is plain: what ranks in Bing is what Copilot grounds on, and Reddit ranks well there for candid product discussion.

Copilot answers from Bing results, and Bing has long surfaced Reddit for candid product talk, so those threads carry into what Copilot repeats.

  • Assume Reddit can feed Copilot via Bing on recommendation questions.
  • Improve your Bing visibility, not just your Google presence.
  • Be well-regarded in the threads Bing surfaces for your category.
  • Keep a clean page Bing can rank alongside the discussion.

Does Claude cite Reddit?

Not much, and this is the honest one. Claude answers mostly from training rather than a live crawl, and industry citation studies find it cites social and forum sources less than search-first assistants do. So while a strong Reddit reputation cannot hurt, it will not reliably get you into Claude the way it can with search-grounded assistants.

The honest answer, not the convenient one

It would be easy to tell you Reddit is the key to every assistant. It is not the key to Claude. Because Claude leans on training and favours well-supported material, forum threads are a small share of what it names, so a hot thread has little direct pull on its answers.

What does help with Claude is a broad, settled reputation: being widely and clearly described as a good option across credible writing it has read. Reddit can contribute to that over time, but as one thread in a much larger record, not a shortcut.

Industry citation studies in 2025 and 2026 consistently find Claude citing Reddit and other social sources less than search-first assistants, partly because it searches the web on fewer prompts.

  • Build durable, well-supported recommendation across many credible sources.
  • Publish clear reference material Claude can quote with confidence.
  • Treat Reddit as one modest contributor, not the lever it is elsewhere.
  • Give it time, since a training-weighted model reflects a slower consensus.

Does Grok cite Reddit?

Sometimes, though less than the search-first assistants. xAI’s Grok leans hardest on real-time posts from X, which is its distinctive edge, and reaches for open-web sources including Reddit when a question needs more considered depth than a live feed can give.

X first, Reddit for depth

Grok’s centre of gravity is X, so for anything happening right now it favours the live feed there. That makes it the assistant where Reddit is least central, simply because a different real-time source sits in the way.

But a stream of short posts is thin for a "is this actually good over months" question. When Grok wants that depth, it turns to the open web, and candid Reddit threads are a natural fit, so it does cite them, just not as its first move.

Grok leans hardest on X for real-time signal, per xAI’s own framing, but it still reaches for open-web sources including Reddit on recommendation questions.

  • Expect Grok to reach for Reddit on considered questions, less on live ones.
  • Be active in the real-time conversation as well as in threads.
  • Be present in the candid Reddit discussion Grok uses for depth.
  • Keep a current reference the open web can point back to.

What the pattern means for you

Line the eight up and a simple rule appears: the more an engine searches the live web before it answers, the more Reddit turns up in what it cites. Perplexity, Google’s two AI surfaces, ChatGPT and Gemini all search, so all of them reach Reddit often. Claude leans on training and barely cites forums. Grok has X in the way.

So for most of the engines your buyers use, the Reddit threads about your category are part of the raw material. The timing matters as much as the presence: a recommendation thread collects its replies in the first day, then settles and gets indexed with those replies fixed. That is why we built a Reddit monitoring tool around a five-minute check rather than a daily digest.

Questions, answered straight

Which AI engines cite Reddit?

Most of them do, to very different degrees. Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode lean on Reddit heavily, ChatGPT and Gemini cite it when they search the web, Copilot picks it up through Bing, Grok reaches for it when X is too thin, and Claude barely cites it at all. If you want to be part of what those engines read, AI citation monitoring starts with the Reddit threads themselves.

Which AI engine cites Reddit the most?

On the analyses we have seen, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews. Profound’s 2024–25 data put Reddit at about 6.6% of all Perplexity citations and around a fifth of the top-ten-domain citations in AI Overviews. Both retrieve live and show their sources, so the effect is easy to see for yourself: ask either one a “which is best” question and count the Reddit links.

Why do AI engines cite Reddit so often?

Because recommendation questions need candid, comparative opinion, and Reddit has more of it, sorted by topic, than almost anywhere else. Google and OpenAI also signed content deals with Reddit in 2024, which put those threads higher in the indexes several engines search.

Can I get my Reddit comment cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

You can improve the odds and nothing more. A useful, disclosed reply in a thread that ranks for your category is the kind of source these engines pick up, but nobody controls which threads get cited or when, so treat any promise of a guaranteed citation as a red flag.

Does subding show me which threads AI engines cite?

No. subding watches Reddit for your keywords and tells you within about five minutes when a matching post or comment appears, so a person on your team can join the thread while it is still live. It does not track which threads an engine later cites, and it never posts for you.

Be in the thread before the engine reads it

You cannot choose which threads an engine cites. You can be useful, under your own name, in the ones about your category, and hear about them while the replies are still coming in.
